Fibromyalgia is often misdiagnosed and misunderstood. Typically a patient will visit a physician with multiple complaints including brain fog, body aches and pains, malaise and fatigue, and depression. This includes symptoms that patients present with that don’t follow a well circumscribed lesion, where blood work leaves no obvious clues, and where during an examination the doctor finds multiple areas of pain and tenderness. This often leads many doctors to the erroneous conclusion that this problem is purely psychological or that the patient is a malingerer.
The diagnosis of fibromyalgia is typically a diagnosis of exclusion, meaning no other cause can be found for the myriad symptoms, specifically where a certain number of trigger points (painful muscles) are found in particular muscle groups. In general, you can think of your symptoms of brain fog, painful muscles and joints, and lack of energy to be a constellation of problems that feed on one another.
We see that most fibromyalgia patients suffering with brain fog, pain, short term memory issues, depression, and more have both a metabolic condition that is in its early stage of disease as well as a poorly functioning brain and brain stem. These conditions are functional issues, and an MRI and conventional lab work will rarely lead to a definitive conclusion for most doctors.
In addition, patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia often have underlying microbial imbalance of the gastrointestinal tracts, leaky guts, autoimmune sensitivities, poor blood sugar regulation, poor gut motility, decreased output on one side of the brain, and lowered brain stem function. All of this leads to sympathetic/ parasympathetic nervous system imbalances, and inflammation that often will not be detected with traditional exam methods and testing.
This is where the doctors at IPMG shine, as we have a lot of experience in putting the myriad of puzzle pieces together and understanding the interrelatedness of the nervous system, immune system, gastrointestinal system, and all the system of your body. The only way a fibromyalgia patient can get well is to get a proper diagnosis of the imbalances within the different body systems that are causing the body to express itself with the symptoms that we label fibromyalgia. The causes of brain fog must be dealt with because if you have brain fog, then your brain is not working properly, you have a loss of clarity, and you cannot therefore dampen the pain messages received by your brain. Fixing the causes of brain fog can be life changing and are a vital part of your healing.
