Though there are actually four different types of diabetes, two of them are commonly identified and they both refer to the way in which your body produces or uses insulin for the control of glucose in the blood.
- Type 1 diabetes occurs when your pancreas releases too little or no insulin .
- Type 2 diabetes occurs when your pancreas releases sufficient insulin but you body is unable to properly use the insulin released.
Type 1 diabetes is typically diagnosed at a young age, is not understood to be preventable, and is not currently known to be reversible. Therefore people with type 1 diabetes learn at a very young age how to manage the glucose levels in their blood with the use of insulin therapy. But type 2 diabetes is much more complicated. It is diagnosed later in life and is the result of a marriage between genetics and poor lifestyle choices. The good news is that it is both preventable and reversible. The genetic component means that you may have the propensity to develop type 2 diabetes, but your lifestyle choices are what trigger the disease to be manifest. In other words, if you are genetically predisposed to diabetes, you are holding a loaded gun in your hand and it is up to you to pull the trigger or put the gun down.
Typically, type II diabetes is managed by testing blood sugar levels and prescribing medications that aim to maintain the blood glucose levels within the normal range. We have found this method to be ineffective at best, and extremely damaging at worse. Not only do the medications not work to lower their blood sugar levels, the side effects to all body organs involved often cause the disease to worsen. This may be why the disease is commonly believed to be not reversible. The missing piece to the puzzle is to understand, for each individual, what is causing the elevated blood sugar levels in the first place. At Integrated Physicians Medical Group, Inc. our diabetes treatment options take a functional medicine approach by conducting a comprehensive exam including a full analysis of our patients’ individual chemistry to understand the underlying causes of their elevated blood glucose levels. From there, we create a customized treatment program that is designed to heal all body systems involved in blood sugar regulation and metabolism.
In addition, we make sure to truly involve our patients on the details of their individual disease. Though there is a lot written about type 2 diabetes, we have found that most type 2 diabetics know very little about their condition and therefore it is very challenging for them to make an educated decision about how to really take care of themselves. Our goal is to gather as much information about each patients’ chemistry and educate the individual on the details of how and why diabetes is playing out in their body. From there, we provide them with a catered plan and empower them to do what is necessary to reverse their disease. We have helped hundreds of patients completely reverse their type 2 diabetes and begin to lead a normal and healthy life.
